 Fourth Grade Curriculum

Language Arts includes reading, writing, and a primary focus of elaborative compositions.  Students read novels for classroom study using a Reader's Workshop approach.  The student reads a wide variety of subjects and genres.  The student will adjust his/her reading rate and strategies to meet the demands of the text and purpose for reading.  Students follow the Writer's Workshop approach and learn to elaborate, proofread, revise and publish their compositions.  The fourth grade student is a proficient speller and edits based on current knowledge of grammar and usage.

A fourth grade student is transitioning from the concrete level to a more abstract leave in applying mathematical concepts.  They are actively participating in problem solving situations through communication that involves math language tools.  A variety of problem-solving strategies are utilized and real-world math examples are discussed.  Mathematics focuses on six strands of thinking:  developing algebraic thinking, measurement, probability and statistics, fractions and decimals, geometry and operations and computations.

The mission in elementary science is to nurture curiosity and lifelong learning, promote learning through questioning and investigation and develop understanding of concepts through problem solving, decision making, and application of knowledge.  The fourth grader will meet this challenge by participating in the use of Full Option Science System (FOSS).  These engaging science kits guide students through inquiry activities, investigation and analyses, as they participate in several hands-on experiments weekly.  Each strand on the science world; life, physical, earth and scientific reasoning and technology, will be covered through assigned grade level kits.  Those kits include Water, Magnetism and Electricity, the Human Body and Ideas and Inventions.  The environment is also studied in a separate unit.  Fourth graders will also continue to be involved in the Hands-On Science program on a regular basis.

A fourth grade student will work on group projects, research papers, and an indepth mutimedia project.  Students will be learning about Texas Regions, Texas History, and Government.  The climate, vegetation, resources, major cities, and region characteristics.  History will be from the first battle to the last battle of  Texas Independence.  This will cover Native Americans, historical figures, and historical places.
