The second grade math curriculum is an effective program that teaches skills and problem solving strategies to develop a solid understanding of numbers. Problem of the week, number of the day, manipulatives, math centers, and mad minute are some of the activities used to strengthen and reinforce students understanding of math concepts throughout the year.
Second grade students are developing into independent readers. The major focus of the reading program is comprehension with fluency. Reading in class will be done from all the different genres. The objective of the reading program is to instill a life-long love of reading. Students in this grade level develop wiring skills by utilizing a variety of activities such as journal entries, author's choice, and writing workshop. The children learn and practice the writing process in class each day. Practice at school and at home through formal and informal writing experiences will help children write for various audiences and purposes.
Social Studies
Me and My World - Students learn about community maps, landforms, and problem solving skills.
All American Kid - Students will study community heritage.
A Hero in Every Heart - Students will study people, both living and dead, who have influenced our lives.
Show Me the Money - Students will learn about goods and services in the community as well as interdependence of the communities of the world.
Science
At Rummel Creek we use FOSS (Full Option Science System) kits.
Wonderful Weather - Students will be looking for evidence that air is matter. They will observe daily weather conditions and record their findings in science journals.
Balance and Motion - Students will explore balance with objects, such as mobiles. Motion is exhibited through the use of ramps and wheels and roller coasters.
Habitats - Students will learn about the lifecycles and environments of butterflies and ladybugs.
Feathered Friends - Students will concentrate on birds while investigating flying creatures.
