Sophie Peterson adds Houston Chronicle Athlete of the Week honor to standout senior season

Memorial High School (MHS) senior Sophie Peterson continues to build on an accomplished distance-running career, adding Houston Chronicle Girls Athlete of the Week honors to her growing list of achievements.

Peterson earned the recognition following a dominant victory at the Golden Eagle Cross Country Invitational in August. She completed the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 53.80 seconds  finishing 50.9 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

The performance set the tone for the senior season of one of Memorial’s most accomplished distance runners.

Peterson finished fifth in the 1,600 meters and sixth in the 800 meters at last season’s state track meet before placing 10th at the state cross-country meet. She also finished 14th at Nike Nationals. Her personal records include 4:52 in the 1,600, 2:10 in the 800 and 17:48 in the 5,000.

Peterson holds Memorial High School’s record in the 1,600 and previously set district middle school records in both the 800 and 1,600.

For Peterson, the Chronicle honor brought both recognition and additional motivation for her final season.

“It was super exciting to get this recognition early on in the season, and just more motivation to keep working hard toward my ambitious goals for this season,” Peterson said.

Those goals extend beyond times and finishes. Some of Peterson’s favorite memories at Memorial have come during the less glamorous parts of distance running , the miles logged together as a team.

“My favorite memories on MHS XC have been our weekly long Sunday fun runs,” Peterson said. “Every Sunday, those of us students who want to, meet at Memorial Park pretty early, and we always have a great time. We meet before sunrise and get to watch it while we run in one of my favorite spots in Houston.”

The runs have become a weekly tradition filled with music, conversation and smoothies afterward and  a reminder that Peterson’s experience at Memorial has been about more than individual accomplishments.

“You don’t quite get it until you run one with the team, but it’s probably one of my favorite moments of the week,” she said. “We always have good music, good convos, and we all go and grab smoothies after.”

During her final cross-country season, Peterson hopes to return to Round Rock in November for the state meet and improve on last year’s performance. She then plans to carry that momentum into her final track season.

More than anything, she wants to enjoy the remaining moments with the teammates who have helped shape her experience.

“I’m really just looking forward to soaking in all the fun last moments with my team,” Peterson said. “I’ve found an even greater appreciation and enjoyment for the sport this season, thanks to all of my teammates’ support.”

For Peterson, the demanding nature of distance running is part of what makes the sport so rewarding.

“Cross country and distance running in general are definitely a grind and probably one of the most demanding sports, but it’s so, so rewarding during the process and looking back at how far you’ve come,” she said.
